Count Duckula: Reboot Required…

The classic British children’s cartoon, Danger Mouse is back on our screens in a rebooted version with Alexander Armstrong and Kevin Eldon as the voices of the two main characters. It also looks like SuperTed is about to make a not so, secret magic comeback.

Why stop with these two? What about the other classic from the same creators? What about bringing back Count Duckula?

Who would I choose as the voices for the main characters for a rebooted Count Duckula..?

Count Duckula is actually a spin-off from Danger Mouse as the character was one of DM’s recurring enemies. Based on Count Dracula but instead of a blood thirsty vampire human/bat hybrid the Count in this case is a vegetarian duck with all other characters also being anthropomorphised birds.

Duckula, originally voiced by David Jason is a cowardly, fame seeking duck who would rather wrap his bill around a nice brocoli sandwich than suck blood from someone’s neck. So, who do I think would do a great job of voicing this character in the modern age?

How about Simon Bird? Known to many for his quirky character Will in the hit sitcom The Inbetweeners, I think Simon would make an excellent Count Duckula…

The New Duckula...

The New Duckula…

Bear in mind that I am making these decision based on voice alone – the fact that Simon might actually resemble the character and that his second name is “Bird” is purely coincidental. Although this does make me think of a particular clip from The Inbetweeners…

Igor, originally voiced by Jack May, is a typical, old-fashioned horror movie butler except he is now played by a vulture. He is a dark character, always trying to bring out the worst in Duckula and lives for the day when Duckula becomes a “real” vampire duck. Igor hunches around and speaks in a slow voice so who could take on this challenge and voice him nowadays?

I immediately thought of the character Dan from BBC sitcom Him & Her who is played by comedian Joe Wilkinson and I think Joe would be perfect for Igor…

New Igor…

Again, I had put no thought into the looks before I made my decision and it is only now that I see the images that I am starting to see visual resemblances. The reason I picked Joe is purely due to the way his character skulks around…

The last of the three main characters is Nanny, originally voice by Brian Trueman, she is a mother hen who is Duckula’s housekeeper. A rather large and clumsy character with a distinct accent she is responsible for Duckula being a vegetarian. My thoughts on who could re-voice Nanny was based on accent. Who has a particularly strong, yet comical accent?

The obvious choice was Geordie stand up comedian Sarah Millican

Sarah is one of my favourite female comedians, I just love her accent…

Finally, the Narrator, originally voiced by Barry Clayton opens and closes every episode in a voice which parodies Vincent Price‘s iconic voice-overs. I did initially think of Jimmy Carr for this role but I didn’t think his voice would be deep enough so a much better choice is comedian Robert Webb from sitcom Peep Show

The New Narrator…

Let’s just see how deep is voice is…

There are many other characters such as Dr. Von Goosewing, The Crow Brothers and The Pirate Penguins who would all need new voices too.

Who do you think would be a good choice to voice all the other characters in this amazing cartoon?
